The US Nationals long distance events wound up this week at Royal Gorge ski centre near Lake Tahoe, California. Canadian athletes had some strong results in the 30 and 50km. championship events.
While Kris Freeman was battling at the front with Andy Newell, Norway's Einar Ulsund and a few other skiers, Whitehorse U23 racer Knute Johnsgaard was skiing a steady paced race just behind the top group. On the final lap Freeman skied away to his 16th National title, while Johnsgaard made steady progress, passing U.S. World Cup Tad Elliott in the final few hundred metres to claim 4th place in a top class competitive field.
The previous day saw U.S. team member Liz Stephen triumph over Kikkan Randall for the 30k title. Junior Canadian skier from Mont Ste. Anne, Anne-Marie Comeau put together a strong result for 15th place as the top junior finisher.
